Grapefruit Nutrition

the nutritional value of grapefruit and full grapefruit nutrition information...

grapefruit

The breakfast favourite, grapefruit nutrition offers an excellent source of vitamin C which helps to keep the immune system in order and fight those nasty infections.

  • High in vitamin C, the grapefruit can help prevent cell and tissue damage from free radicals, thereby protecting the body from serious diseases such as cancer. Vitamin C also improves iron absorption.

  • Choose grapefruits that are pink and red in colour where possible as these contain a phytonutrient called lycopene which may help to protect the body against tumours. Lycopene is the strongest phytonutrient in the prevention of free radical damage to the body cells.

  • Grapefruits provide and very good source of vitamin A which plays a part in eye health and helps to fight off viral infections.

  • Grapefruit juice ranks highly amongst other fruit juices in antioxidant compounds.

  • Grapefruits contain a soluble fibre called pectin which has been shown to slow down atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is the thickening of artery walls by plaque build up which can lead to heart disease and stroke.

  • Grapefruit juice may also help to prevent lung and colon cancer.

  • Consuming grapefruits may also help if you want to lose weight as it has been shown to lower insulin levels.

  • Consuming grapefruit juice enhances liver detoxification, which helps to remove waste from the body, and remove toxins which may cause cancer.

  • One whole grapefruit contains around 41 calories.
