Grape Nutrition

the nutritional value of grapes and full grape nutrition information...

grapes

Grapes contain an excellent and unique source of phytonutrients which are extremely beneficial to our health.

  • Grapes contain health giving phytonutrients which are mostly condensed in their skin, stems and seeds.

  • Red grapes contain a phytonutrient called a flavonoid. This is what gives grapes their dark red colour and they are beneficial at reducing harmful blood clots and protecting free radical damage to cells and tissues.

  • Grape juice protects you from "bad" LDL cholesterol. Too much of this type of cholesterol is dangerous because it causes the arteries to become clogged and then can cause heart disease and stroke.

  • The French Paradox is a term used to describe the French diet being high in animal fat but low in heart disease. This is thought to be because of the health benefits from red wine consumption (made from grapes).

  • The polyphenols which are found in grapes (and especially the grapes' skin) provide excellent health benefits such as - the reduction of vascular damage, decreased activity of of a hormone called "angiotensin", which can cause blood vessel constriction.

  • Grape phytochemicals such as resveratrol (a type of antioxidant), has been linked to inhibiting any cancer, heart disease, degenerative nerve disease, viral infections and mechanisms of Alzheimers disease.

  • Red wine is well known for its health benefits. Saponins are a phytonutrient which is found in the grapes' waxy skin and dissolves into the wine during the fermentation process.

Saponins are thought to bind to and prevent the absorption of cholesterol into the body and are also thought to calm down inflammation pathways which could contribute to heart disease and cancer.

  • Grapes also contain pterostilbene, which is a powerful antioxidant that is known to fight cancer and may lower cholesterol levels.

  • Evidence suggests grapes and grape juice offers considerable cardiovascular benefits.

  • One cup of grapes contains around 104 calories.
